La Quinta Resort & Club

It probably sounded preposterous when Walter H. Morgan, heir to an oyster fortune, announced he was buying 1,400 acres of undeveloped desert to build a hotel. But in 1926, he opened La Quinta Hotel, a 20-casita retreat with three courtyards and the valley’s first nine-hole golf course, where green fees were $1 a day. A century later, his vision thrives at La Quinta Resort & Club, the property that gave this city its name.

Today, more than 800 rooms spread across 45 acres of bougainvillea-lined gardens. Guests float between 40 pools, play on 21 tennis courts and eight pickleball courts, or tee off at five PGA WEST championship courses. History lingers here, too: Ginger Rogers wed on the grounds, Frank Capra wrote screenplays from his casita, and The Golden Bachelor’s nuptials were televised from the lawn. For generations, celebrities and seekers alike have come for what Morgan promised — an escape devoted to rejuvenation and memory-making.

The Chateau at Lake La Quinta

Set on a 25-acre man-made lake, this boutique hotel feels more French manor than SoCal hideaway. Verdant lawns, flowering gardens, and just 24 rooms — each with a king bed and lake views, many with patios or balconies — keep the atmosphere intimate. Mélange, the waterside restaurant, serves California fare with European flair, from strawberry and goat cheese blintzes to lemon-spritzed salmon salad and chutney-glazed Duroc pork chops.
