The fascination points to a simple desire to live well and live well \u200a<i>longe<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><i>r<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s2\">. That instinct drives global public-health conversations around \u201chealthy aging\u201d and helps explain why societies across history developed practices to extend vitality. Physicians and sociologists measure this not only by age but by \u201cquality-of-life years,\u201d the span in which we move comfortably, think clearly, stay engaged, and <\/span>enjoy the people around us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Studies from Harvard, the National Institutes of Health, and other major research institutions show that small, consistent habits matter far more for long-term health than dramatic reinventions. We spoke with two local experts for some perspective: family medicine physician Dr. Gregory \u201cReid\u201d Lancaster, who runs <a href=\"https:\/\/ethosmodernmedicine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethos Modern Medicine<\/a> in La Quinta, and sociologist Eric Vogelsang, Ph.D., director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csusb.edu\/aging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center on Aging<\/a> at <\/span>California State University, San Bernardino.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>Prioritize small habits<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Lancaster emphasizes foundational behaviors. \u201cThe more we learn in this field,\u201d he says, \u201cthe more we realize the best solutions are things humans have known forever. Eat real food. Sleep well. Move your body. Keep your body fat down. Have healthy relationships. Practice gratitude. Forgive instead of holding onto things. If you do these things consistently, you\u2019re healthier longer and <\/span>you have a better life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Preventive care is part of \u200athat foundation. Lancaster encourages patients to stay current on routine screenings, from bloodwork to cancer checks. \u201cNumber one is don\u2019t die unnecessarily,\u201d he says. \u201cStay in touch with your doctor. Catching things early often <\/span><span class=\"s5\">results in far better outcomes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>Create movement patterns that stick<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">When it comes to movement, structure matters. A day can quickly fill with tasks, and each one draws from what Lancaster calls our limited \u201cdecision battery.\u201d Without a plan, even the best intentions to exercise can <\/span>fade as the day fills with competing demands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">A weekly routine helps reduce that friction. Lancaster suggests establishing a baseline that\u2019s easy to return to even on hectic days \u2014 perhaps strength training on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and walks on Tuesday and Thursday. \u201cIf you make it your baseline, you don\u2019t have to renegotiate <\/span><span class=\"s5\">with\u200a yourself \u200aevery day,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Accountability helps too. Whether it\u2019s a friend, partner, or standing class, knowing someone is waiting for you increases the likelihood that you\u2019ll show up. \u201cIf someone else is expecting you, adherence skyrockets,\u201d Lancaster says. \u201cJust get there. Once you <\/span>show up, the decisions are made for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">He recommends getting outdoors for added enjoyment, especially here in the Coachella Valley, where recreation abounds. That might mean a scenic hike, a neighborhood walk, or joining the region\u2019s thriving pickleball scene. \u201cIf Tuesday is your walk with Judy and Thursday is pickleball <\/span><span class=\"s5\">night, you\u2019re going to do it,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\"><b>Expand your community<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">For Vogelsang, social connection is an essential \u2014 and often overlooked \u2014 pillar of longevity. \u201cBeing angry, being stressed, holding \u200agrudges, none of \u200athat is good for us,\u201d he says. \u201cBut being around others, especially in meaningful ways, is.\u201d Whether it\u2019s a group exercise class, a community organization, or a neighborhood gathering, shared activities can support long-term well-being in ways that extend beyond the activity itself. \u201cIn an exercise class, you\u2019re keeping fit,\u201d Vogelsang notes, \u201cbut you also gain the benefit of <\/span>social \u200aconnection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Volunteering is another powerful avenue. \u201cThere\u2019s strong evidence that volunteering not only helps others, but it might also be the best activity you can do for yourself,\u201d Vogelsang says. For older adults in particular, expanding community becomes increasingly important as household networks shrink over time. Even about 15 minutes a day offers benefits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>85.3% Safe Outdoor Access<br \/><\/strong>A 2022 survey from Health Assessment and Research for Communities (HARC) finds that 85.3% of Coachella Valley adults feel safe walking, biking, or hiking near their homes, reflecting the region\u2019s broad access to outdoor spaces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8% Loneliness Rate<br \/><\/strong>About 22% of adults nationwide report feeling lonely or isolated \u201coften\u201d or \u201calways,\u201d according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. In the Coachella Valley, HARC reports just 8% \u2014 a notably lower rate that suggests strong connection here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7 in 10 Annual Checkups<br \/><\/strong>Nearly 70% of Coachella Valley adults had a routine checkup in the past year, according to HARC, signaling consistent engagement in preventive care.
