Five small lava domes along the southeastern edge of the sea are fueled by geothermic activity below the surface. Though the last explosive eruption occurred approximately 1,800 years ago, the volcanic areas still contain boiling mud pots, where hot muck bubbles on ground level. You can look, but don\u2019t touch. <a href=\"https:\/\/usgs.gov\/volcanoes\/salton-buttes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span  ><em>usgs.gov\/volcanoes\/salton-buttes<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;1&#8243;]<h3>Slab City<\/h3>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;1&#8243; text_font=&#8221;|400|||||||&#8221;]<p>Named for the concrete slabs left behind after a World War II training camp was demolished, this off-grid community \u2014 dubbed \u201cthe last free place in America&#8221; \u2014 brims with offbeat art and ideas. If you go, check out the East Jesus neighborhood and the Slab City hot spring, which you\u2019ll find along the side of the road. <a href=\"https:\/\/eastjesus.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span  ><em>eastjesus.org<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;1&#8243;]<h3>Bombay Beach<\/h3>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;1&#8243; text_font=&#8221;|400|||||||&#8221;]<p>Strewn with detritus from decades past, the abandoned shores of \u2028the Salton Sea have become a canvas for installation artists. The clubhouse shuttered \u2028in the \u201980s but was restored and reopened in 2010. Today, it \u2028serves as a community center. <a href=\"https:\/\/myrecreation\u2028district.com\" data-wplink-url-error=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span  ><em>myrecreation\u2028district.com<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;1&#8243;]<h3>Salvation Mountain<\/h3>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;1&#8243; text_font=&#8221;|400|||||||&#8221;]<p>They say faith can move mountains. Turns out, it can also build them. Colorful, bold, and in-your-face, this 50-foot-high, 150-foot-wide rainbow hillside was crafted over three decades by late evangelist Leonard Knight using adobe clay, straw, and more than 100,000 gallons of paint.
