Need a Last-Minute Card or Desert-Themed Puzzle? Try Smoke Tree Greetings https://www.palmspringslife.com/shopping-style/shopping/need-a-last-minute-card-or-desert-themed-puzzle-try-smoke-tree-greetings/ Sat, 13 Dec 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.palmspringslife.com/?p=778333 I’m a well-wishing Luddite: I still prefer to give and receive physical greeting cards for birthdays, holidays, thank-yous, and other occasions, rather than e-cards. Stores that specialize in greeting cards are more difficult to find as correspondence leans digital, so I’m grateful to have one in a shopping center I visit frequently: Smoke Tree Greetings at Smoke Tree Village in Palm Springs.

Natasha Marin Finds Inspiration in Joshua Tree for New Electronic Album https://www.palmspringslife.com/arts-culture/natasha-marin-finds-inspiration-in-joshua-tree-for-new-electronic-album/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.palmspringslife.com/?p=778718 A desert storm comes to Natasha Marin first through scent. “The creosote bushes, they emit that special oil,” she says. Color is next: After an enveloping darkness and deluge, out come “the oranges and purples, layers of different shades,” ending in a startling burst of sunshine. The musician then translates all she has sensed into electronic sound: an underlying ominous, repetitive bass progression, followed by plunked-out individual notes that grow wild as the dynamics rise. Ascending and descending violin scales add a shower of chaos

He notices the wrinkles in their bark, the red tinge in new leaf  tissue (nature’s sunblock), the gnarled, “Tim Burtonesque” twists of their limbs. And with his camera, he captures their artistry as living sculptures.

Preckwinkle III, an Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Tribal Council member, grew up in Northern California, away from his tribe’s reservation and culture in the Palm Springs area — until a Christmastime visit at age 14 changed everything. Tribal members gave him and other young people iPods with recordings of the songs of his great-grandfather, John Joseph Patencio, considered the last ceremonial bird singer, or hawanik, of  his people. Preckwinkle was intrigued by the family connection as well as the music.
