Sight is often considered the most valued of the five senses — and the one most people can’t imagine living without. That makes it all the more important to take proactive steps to protect it. Regular screening exams with an optometrist or general eye care provider are essential, as many eye conditions can develop gradually and without noticeable symptoms.

For healthy adults, the general screening guidelines vary by age and risk factors. After age 40, experts recommend a check-up every two to four years. Between ages 55 and 65, that window narrows to every one to three years. After 65, the ideal schedule is every one to two years.

“Of course, if there are other health issues such as diabetes or actual eye disease, you’ll need a more frequent examination schedule,” says Dr. Keith G. Tokuhara, a Rancho Mirage ophthalmologist who specializes in complex cataract surgery at Desert Vision Center. Early detection and treatment of diabetic eye disease, for example, is important for preserving vision long term.
