Listen to this story:

Your skin is a living and breathing organ that also acts as your body’s first defense against the elements. The uppermost layer of your skin, aka the skin barrier, contains a complex network of neurons that provide constant communication to the central nervous system and brain, playing a vital role in how we experience elements of touch like temperature, texture, and pain.

It’s important work to defend against environmental elements like the sun, wind, and dry air, which are part of daily life here in the desert. “The skin barrier — primarily the stratum corneum — is the outermost layer of the skin that acts as a protective shield,” says Dr. Timothy Jochen of Contour Dermatology, which has offices across the Coachella Valley. “It prevents excessive water loss, shields against environmental aggressors like pollutants and pathogens, and maintains overall skin homeostasis.”

Alongside environmental stressors, some skincare routines can also unknowingly harm this protective layer. “Overuse of exfoliants can strip away natural oils, leading to dryness and sensitivity. Harsh soaps or cleansers can disrupt the skin’s pH balance, weakening its defense mechanisms,” Jochen explains. If your skin is red, flaky, or feels extra sensitive, these could be signs that the skin barrier is compromised.

Luckily, restorative care doesn’t require a full overhaul. Jochen recommends looking for products that include ceramides to replenish natural lipids, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and niacinamide to stimulate the production of ceramides. Stick with fragrance-free and gentle cleansers, and never skip sunscreen — even on cloudy days. “A healthy skin barrier is essential for keeping the skin hydrated, resilient, and less prone to irritation and infections,” he says.

In our desert environment, where the senses are always invited to engage, taking care of touch is a wellness win.
