The biggest misconception about cosmetic procedures is that, because a healthy patient is making a choice to have something done, it isn’t “real” surgery. Patients perceive that cosmetic surgery isn’t as serious and therefore diminish the potential complications or may not follow the recommendations like they would if they were having a medically necessary surgery. Any surgical intervention comes with inherent risks, and following physician guidance is always important. Discussing complications before surgery is essential to a good outcome.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle — being strong and cardiovascularly fit — is essential to the recovery process after surgery. I tell all my patients, “The fitter you are going into surgery, the easier your recovery will be.” It’s important to realize that having cosmetic surgery does not make working on your own personal fitness unnecessary; it truly enhances the effort that you put into yourself.
