Listen to this story:

Evenings in May offer an opportunity to spot one of the most recognizable asterisms in the night sky — the Big Dipper. Many people know that the two stars at the end of the Dipper’s bowl point to Polaris, the North Star. But the Big Dipper can also help you locate other celestial objects. Just remember this phrase: “Arc to Arcturus, spike to Spica, and leap to Leo.” Start by following the arc of the Dipper’s handle to Arcturus, the brightest star in the constellation Boötes. Extend that arc, and you’ll arrive at Spica, the brightest star in Virgo. From there, wander past the highest point in the sky and you’ll find Leo and its brightest star, Regulus.
