A short drive from downtown Palm Springs, a beautiful oasis rises from the San Jacinto foothills.
The Indian Canyons, sacred to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians since time immemorial, contains more than 60 miles of switchback trails through pristine scenery. From gorges and desertscape to waterfalls and the world’s largest natural grouping of Washingtonia filifera (also known as the California fan palm), the area’s beauty draws people from around the world to experience its tranquil surroundings.

The Indian Canyons comprise the Palm, Andreas, and Murray canyons, each great stops for the adventurous hiker, reflective meditator, and casual stroller. At 15 miles long, Palm Canyon offers abundant flora and fauna in a rocky desert landscape. Andreas Canyon’s lush oasis presents more than 150 species of plants, unusual rock formations, and Andreas Creek. Hiking and native wildlife such as the Peninsular bighorn sheep abound at Murray Canyon.
This sacred land was once inhabited by the ancestors of the Agua Caliente people, who were drawn to the shelter of its jagged cliffs, the shade of its lush palm groves, and the perennial water flows. Remnants of irrigation ditches, rock mortar grounds, and rock art remain in the area today.
