Located near Palm Desert, this moderately challenging, out-and-back route covers approximately 3 miles round trip, winding through a scenic canyon with a seasonal waterfall — and the area is only open for a short time each year, closing seasonally (January through September) for bighorn lambing.
With a 413-foot elevation gain, the trail is ideal for hiking, walking, and trail running and offers a peaceful escape despite its popularity. Be prepared for rocky terrain and no shade, and note that dogs are not allowed. Expect sweeping canyon views that showcase the desert landscape.
Park at the Carrizo Canyon Ecological Reserve parking area, near the southern end of Highway 74 in Palm Desert (coordinates: 33.6710056, -116.4086617). Nearby routes include the Art Smith and Randall Henderson trails.
