A beloved Coachella Valley institution, Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert serves valley travelers as well as the generation of desert dwellers who grew up playing at the museum and now bring their own kids to take part in science, art, and hands-on learning exhibits. Indoor and outdoor experiences reinforce learning, and during summer months, weeklong discovery camps invite children to engage in themes such as architecture, oceans, and superheroes. This destination is best suited for kids 8 and under.
Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by “Joy,” a magnetic bunny kids can decorate; building blocks; a garden taco stand; and a puppet theater.

You’re a Certified Autism Destination. What does that mean?
We are a Certified Autism Center, which means we have sensory guides for guests that explain the type and level of stimulation of each of our experiences. Our sensory room serves as a private calming space where
children who are feeling overwhelmed can find comfort and use sensory bags. Earphones are available if needed.
The museum relaunch includes 40 new exhibits. Can you share a few favorites?
Besides our ambassador bunny, Joy, I have three favorite exhibits. I love the bravery and confidence that results from climbing our 14-foot rope climbing structure; the sweetness of Explore, our space designed for toddlers; and the beauty and engagement of the Express House with its stained glass windows.
What types of programs does the museum offer?
The museum offers a variety of programming including Open Art, Story Time, Music and Movement, and Science Nights, to name a few. We also have toddler classes and yoga classes for kids and their grown-ups, and special events throughout the year.
What’s next for the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert?
We are excited to expand our educational significance in the valley through more hands-on programs and activities. A new teen center welcoming middle school and high school-age kids is opening soon as well. And we plan to bring our expertise to the community through our Museums on the Go program.
