With deep ties to the region’s agricultural sector, Coachella is a city shaped by labor, family, and perseverance. Larger households and a high share of children contribute to the valley’s lowest median age. As the population grows, new housing and civic investments — including upgraded parks and green infrastructure — continue to support a young, multigenerational community whose needs will steer the city’s future.

Then

In the 1960s and ’70s, Coachella became a battleground in the civil rights movement as activists including César Chávez and Dolores Huerta led farmworkers in protests for fair pay and safer working conditions. The demonstrations were part of the broader United Farm Workers movement, which ultimately secured landmark labor contracts and lasting reforms.

Now

In 2023, the city and 11 partner organizations launched Coachella Prospera, a wide-reaching grant initiative aimed at improving quality of life across the city. The program invests in recreational and wellness facilities, zero-emission public transportation, affordable housing, urban forests, and solar energy systems that boost home efficiency. It also supports the development of parks and open spaces, sidewalks and bike trails that promote mobility, and economic opportunities focused on long-range community well-being.
