In 1926, entrepreneur Walter H. Morgan, heir to an oyster company fortune, opened a Spanish-style refuge on 1,400 acres in the East Valley foothills, naming it La Quinta Hotel (now La Quinta Resort & Club), a title that would later identify the surrounding town, making La Quinta one of only two cities in the country named after a resort, the other being Beverly Hills.
