The emotion hits without warning, like a wave breaking out of flat water. One minute you’re admiring the rolling roofline, the midcentury materials palette, the classic furnishings swathed in crisp Maharam stripes. The next, you’re scanning for a seat just to take it all in. You — no exaggeration — need a moment to process the rush.
Jack Garrity and Tom Rosato will embrace hard work to sip from the good life. That said, tackling a complete gut renovation of their New York City apartment in 2018 felt like guzzling a potent 13-month cocktail of city regulations, sleepless nights, and apology gift baskets for their neighbors.
A Fox in the kitchen, a bird in the bathroom, and a bunny in the bedroom — these creatures inhabit the walls of designer Michelle Boudreau’s retreat near Big Bear Lake. Each framed vintage wildlife painting adds a whimsical character to the modern fairy tale that the Palm Springs–based designer has created in her two-story hideaway. Here, she combines the warmth of a cozy ski chalet with contemporary refinement — and without a wince of cabin kitsch.
Interior designer Jeffrey Neve bases his eponymous firm in the Bay Area, but his heart belongs to the desert. “I grew up in Dana Point, so we used to come out every year for Easter,” he says. “There’s nothing like Palm Springs in February and March – it’s such a relief to have the sunshine and 70-degree weather. It feels so good.”
Bowls, platters, and trays are part of a full collection that holds a secret identity. Designed for everyday use, Mud Australia’s beautiful porcelain dinnerware and serving pieces transition from the oven or microwave to the table or buffet, then straight into the dishwasher.
First things first: It’s all paint. “I’ve tried decals,” artist and muralist Brian Wolbaum says. “They’re a pain — even the small ones.” He put down a deposit on his Cody Place condo in South Palm Springs a year before moving in, giving him time to plan the groovy, supersize murals and the bright furnishings that round out his eye-popping designs.

“Resort living at its best!” touted a 1959 brochure for Racquet Club Road Estates. Homes designed by William Krisel of Palmer & Krisel Architects and built by the Alexander Construction Company promised “the most dazzling view in all of Palm Springs,” three-ton air-conditioners, built-in appliances, and “luxurious wall-to-wall carpeting throughout.” Krisel ensured variety in plan, elevation, and roofline across the development of almost 550 homes, shaping the neighborhood’s distinct character.
