“We like to think of ShortFest as being a filmmaker’s festival,” says Lili Rodriguez, artistic director of the Palm Springs International Film Society, which hosts the world’s largest short film festival in the desert each year. “The filmmakers love to hear from audiences and get their reactions, and our audiences love to talk to these filmmakers about their work.”
Now in its 31st year, ShortFest will screen more than 300 mini movies (selected from over 6,000 submissions) in 90-minute blocks. While the shorts are grouped by theme, Rodriguez recommends booking a ticket sight unseen: “Just show up to a random block,” she says. You’re bound to see something you like — and maybe even a famous (or up-and-coming) face. Actors Bella Thorne, Taika Waititi, and Riz Ahmed are all ShortFest alums. This year’s lineup includes films featuring actord like Alan Cumming, Alicia Silverstone, Bella Ramsey, Pauline Chalamet, Haley Joel Osment, and more.
By night, the festival hosts parties, panels, and networking events where industry pros mingle and learn. “ShortFest is great for film lovers because shorts are where all the cool, exciting things are happening,” Rodriguez says. “There isn’t the pressure of the feature-length movie, so [directors] can get as creative as possible. If people love exploring and seeing what’s out there, this is a wonderful festival to do that.”
